Getting an assignment to photograph an old farmhouse next to a narrow multi-family residential
building didn’t sound like the most exciting job from the get go. Little did I know, or soon learn,
that the future of residential living is small, compact and communal, or least in an idealistic utopian
manner this is the way we should be dwelling. Having photographed many residential dwellings
throughout my career, from large and ostentatious, to small and simplistic, a principal concern
behind this particular multi-family building project was the careful thought of how people or residents
interact and live together.
Built by a good client of mine, Barry Swenson Builder, and designed by McCamant & Durrett Architects,
the Mountain View Cohousing, project completed this year. It is an important example of what good design
should provide, a place to gather, work, play and live in a communal environment that provides a true sense
of community.
